MODI GOVERNMENT CABINET RESHUFFLE

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reshuffled his Cabinet for the third time since taking oath in 2014. Nine new ministers took oath in the fresh cabinet reshuffle which took place on Sunday, 3rd September 2017.
Four ministers - Piyush Goyal, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmendra Pradhan and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi were elevated to cabinet level. Arun Jaithley kept Finance. Suresh Prabhu was transferred to Commerce ministry from Railways. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has been also given the charge of Water Resources. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore replaced Vijay Goel as Sports Minister, which was applauded a lot by Milkha Singh.

The biggest gainer of the Cabinet reshuffle was Nirmala Sitharaman, who was holding the Commerce portfolio as a Minister of State being elevated to Cabinet. She will now be a part of Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), which will now have two women members for the first time. The Cabinet rejig could be seen as a reward for those who performed well and a punishment for those who couldn't do well. Six Ministers resigned to make way for the new faces. The Council of Ministers now has 76 Ministers, up from 73.

The Prime Minister and BJP Chief Amit Shah met the new ministers in the morning at the Prime Minister's residence. The PM told them to "do a good job" as he starts his preparation for the Lok Sabha election scheduled in 2019. The Prime Minister left for China soon after the oath ceremony to attend the ninth edition of BRICS summit.
